And then, later in the day I could see this...

Can anyone guess where this is, and better yet, the name of the peak on the right? It has some significance in mountain bike racing history....

Are you in AZ? At McDowell?
Camelback mountain, AZ
Very good guesses, both of you!
I was indeed in AZ, in Scottsdale, but unfortunately for a last-minute short funeral trip.... wish I could say I had gotten to ride at McDowell! Though I am now thinking it would be cool to go to the Norba race there - I forgot how much I like that area. The Sonoran Desert in general is a favorite place for me. I did the McDowell course once when it was the Cactus Cup and liked it.
Now I am back shoveling snow along with everyone else....
The McDowell mountains and the Park would have been behind me, to the east, as I was taking the pic of the peak.
As for Camelback, I think that is a little further south of the pic, though I could be wrong. The pic does look like a camel's back!
The peak on the right is Pinnacle Peak, home of the first Cactus Cup race, which took place at Pinnacle Peak Patio, I believe. Now, sadly, it is a GOLF course, not a race course, surrounded by homes.
Cactus Cup then moved to a venue called Westworld, before Sea Otter took over as the season opener. It was at one time the season opener and a big event for the industry, but Sea Otter took over that role as it (Sea Otter) grew each year.
It was lots of fun for us Midwesterners- many of us would come in last, but we enjoyed seeing the sun for the first time in months!
They gave us a plastic comb in our registration bags. Why? for removing the inevitable cactus needles from getting too close to the cholla cacti....!!
And then, Cactus Cup moved to McDowell Mountain Park for 1998 and 1999 after part of the previous course got developed. In '98 (I think) it was muddy and raining and I thought, at the time, that that was really odd for the desert.
just a little piece of mountain bike history...
